US Funds Chinese HIV/AIDS Prevention Campaign

The U.S.-funded, $3.5 million campaign will target industrial sectors in China where workers are known to engage in high-risk behavior, such as commercial sex and intravenous drug use. That means targeting China's estimated 200 million mostly male migrant workers, who are often away from their wives for long periods of time. Few migrant workers receive education on sexual diseases, and there is a concern that those who have unsafe sex with prostitutes may spread the AIDS virus among the general population when they return to their hometowns. Think about 200 million migrant workers with high-risk behavior and no education on HIV/AIDS moving around China. And as the car becomes China's technological must-have of the 21st century, transporation infrastructure is being built to reach rural and remote parts of China. The disease will be able to move more easily and spread to China's one billion citizens. China must address HIV/AIDS through education and prevention in order to avoid a catastrophic HIV/AIDS epidemic never seen before. $3.5 million is a drop in the bucket. And why is the US funding this campaign if China is supposed to be the economic powerhouse of the 21st century? This is something to exam more closely and see if the Chinese government is really on-board with HIV/AIDS education and prevention? Source
